If you are new to blogging as I am then you are gonna need a place to start. There will be some initial funding required but you need to think of this as an investment and not an expense. This really is an investment and as I have said in previous posts this will be a marathon rather than a sprint.
So….where to start? Well the first thing you should do is find yourself a domain name. One that suits what you are going to be blogging about or one that reflects who you are. As you can see from my domain name I have gone for something that lets you know who I am, “Ian-Sharp.com”. If you do manage to get your name as a domain name, great. This may not be possible as there may be a lot of people out there with the same name as you. If your name isn’t available try putting a hyphen in the middle as I have done.
I would definitely try to get a .com domain name rather than a .co.uk or .org or any other alternative. A .com domain name is the most popular domain name but if you can’t find anything that suits your needs I think that the .net would be a suitable alternative.
There are plenty of web sites out there who will sell you a domain name and I find that if you type in a domain name in to google and it is available you will be directed to a site that will be happy to sell you that domain name. If you’re just starting out and you’re not sure that blogging is for you then try to make things as cheap as you can. Buy the domain name for 1 year at first. See how it goes.
Once you have bought your domain name and decided what your niche is then you’ll be ready to move on to domain hosting. Believe me…there are lots of hosts out there who will be more than happy to take your money and host your domain. This is something that I will be talking about next time.
So….go get your domain name. That’s definitely the place to start.
Don’t forget to register for my blog and be informed when I post my next blog which will be all about choosing the right domain host for you.
Hope to see you again soon….
